CONSERVE PRAIRIE

Cattle in prairie meadow with wildflowers

Grass-fed.

Grass-finished.

Prairie-friendly.

Our cattle graze native grasses and prairie plants on hills that used to sit at the bottom of an ancient sea. This geology is the foundation for the Flint Hills—the world’s last remaining intact tallgrass prairie landscape, which our family (and cattle) help conserve.

ABOUT US

Rachel and Ryan with cattle on farm

At Ancient Ocean Beef Co., we take pride in offering high-quality, prairie-friendly beef from animals that eat a native-plant based diet on our family’s ranchland in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Our cattle are ethically raised on regeneratively managed land, promoting native biodiversity, providing wildlife habitat, enhancing the health of the prairie, and contributing to the conservation and rewilding of one of the world’s most endangered ecosystems. We also love to share the beef that we feed our family and the prairie with others!

AOBC is owned by Ryan and Rachel Klataske, with help from their children, Thomas and Maeve. Ryan is an anthropologist that studies agriculture, ranching, beef production, conservation, and rural life, and Rachel is a food scientist with roots in Kansas family farming as well. Founded in 2023, our company builds on a rich family legacy of agriculture, cattle raising, and conservation in Kansas. To produce our prairie-friendly beef, we partner with Ryan’s father, Ron Klataske, a cattle producer and wise steward of the land, as well as a wildlife biologist with deep knowledge of the prairie and a renowned conservation leader in the Great Plains. Our shared philosophy that cattle production and conservation can work together inspires our mission: to produce beef that is healthy, delicious, and good for the prairie.

Join us in eating prairie-friendly beef and help conserve the Flint Hills, North America’s last remaining intact native tallgrass prairie landscape. As our boy, Thomas, loves to share, our company’s name reflects our appreciation of this unique landscape and the ancient geology that has helped this prairie endure.

Thank you for supporting our mission!
